Prescriptions

Repeat Prescriptions

Some patients may be issued with repeat prescriptions for their medication (items are listed on a sheet on the right hand side of the prescription) so that they do not need to consult the doctor each time a script is requested.

Requests can be made by:

  • Using the right hand side of last prescription to indicate which items are required for the next month, which may be left in the ‘repeat prescription box’, or alternatively be posted.
  • Order by email: [email protected]
  • By completion of the Repeat Prescription request form located on the Reception desk
  • Via the Internet or NHS App if you are registered  (if you require details please contact Reception)
  • We do not accept requests for repeat prescriptions over the telephone

We need 48 hours to prepare the prescription. Requests received before 6pm will normally be ready the next but one day after 2pm; for example, a request received on a Monday means the prescription is ready for collection after 2pm on Wednesday. All patients on repeat prescriptions must see the doctor for review at least every 6 months. If the hospital changes your medication please let us know to change your repeat prescription.

Medication Reviews

Why do we do Medication reviews?

It is important to review medication regularly to make sure it is appropriate for you. Each individual varies biologically which means different medications suit different people better. By having medication reviews we can help make sure you are benefiting well from your medicine and that you are not suffering from any avoidable side effects.

How do we organise the medication reviews?

On a patient’s computer record there is a repeat prescription document containing a review date. When this date expires you will be invited for a medication review a note on your repeat sheet, a telephone call or an SMS message. It is important you pay attention to such notices so we can make sure your medication prescriptions can continue.

What happens at a medication review?

  • We confirm which medicines you are taking on a regular or as required basis.
  • We make sure you understand why you have been given that medicine and know how to take it or use devices such as inhalers.
  • You may be asked about any herbal remedies or supplements you take as they can interfere with your prescribed medications.
  • Practical aspects of ordering and obtaining supplies can also be discussed.
  • We offer medication support where necessary such as reminder charts or “dossette” boxes or other appliances.
  • We answer your questions about the medicines you take.
  • We update the review date for an appropriate time period.
  • We invite you to attend any blood tests or blood pressure check-ups as appropriate.

The doctor or pharmacist will do medication reviews but if you need a blood test or any other reviews for long term conditions such as diabetes or asthma you may be asked to see the nurse or phlebotomist.

Lost or stolen medication

Please take care to keep your medicines safe. If your medication is lost or stolen, please contact the practice and explain what has happened.

Replacement prescriptions are not issued automatically and each request will be reviewed by a clinician to make sure that any further prescribing is safe and appropriate. Requests for controlled drugs or other medicines with a risk of misuse will be considered particularly carefully, and we may ask you to report stolen medication to the police.

If you have completely run out of an essential medicine and need it urgently, you can also seek advice from a community pharmacy or NHS 111.

Extra medication for holidays

If you are going away and need your regular medication earlier than usual, or require an additional supply to cover your holiday, please let us know when you submit your prescription request.

We are happy to consider requests provided it is clinically safe and appropriate to do so. Some medicines may have restrictions on the quantity that can be prescribed, particularly controlled drugs or medicines requiring regular monitoring. Some medicines may be restricted or controlled in other countries. Please check the rules for your destination, including any countries you are travelling through, before taking medication abroad.

Please request any additional medication in good time before you travel.
